Plenty of practice over the Christmas period paid off for Judd Trump as he won Group Two of Championship League Snooker, defeating Mark Williams in the final on Thursday evening. Trophyless this season, Trump looked fluent in day two of the two day event after looking less than sharp in the opener.

For Williams it was his second attempt to reach the finals but he takes £8,000 forward into Group Three. Earlier both players enjoyed 3-0 semi-final wins over Mark Selby, who won six from six in the group stages and Joe Perry.

“I normally seem to play quite well here but I started off slowly this time. Towards the end in the knockout I played better, against Selby and Williams I got a bit of confidence and hopefully I can take that into the Masters,” said Trump.

“I have practiced hard over Christmas so I would have been disappointed to go out early, and I didn’t play well on the first day. To win the group like that I am pleased.

“I haven’t won a tournament this season so this is a big tournament for me now as I need to win one, so I am pleased to get through to Winners’ Group,” he added.

Taking place at Crondon Park Golf Club in Essex, Championship League Snooker features seven players with the winner moving forward to the final all-winners group and the bottom two players leaving the competition.

Williams, Perry, Selby, and Ricky Walden will be joined on 25th January by Stephen Maguire, Marco Fu and Michael White as Group Three convenes.

The Championship League Snooker event is a venture between Matchroom Sport and Perform where 25 of the game’s elite players compete with all matches broadcast on a host of betting websites.

Each group features seven players with each man playing the other six once in a round-robin basis. Every match is the best of five and the winner gains one point with the loser getting zero.

At the end of the league phase the top four advances to that group’s semi-finals where the two winners meet in the final and the winner advances to the Winners’ Group in March.
The losing finalist, two losing semi-finalists and player finishing fifth move into the next group where they are joined by three new players and the process is repeated.

Group Three commences at 12.00 on Monday 25th January. Live scoring can be found at www.worldsnooker.com
